This task is optional. If Business Process Design is in scope Performance measurement is a critical, i.e. non-optional activity. The purpose of this exercise is to estimate what the theoretical performance of the process can be or will be based on the process design and KPI definition. This calculation or these values derived from simulation are used as a baseline or point of reference for future KPI measurements. Normally such an exercise will require assumptions about the implementation aspects of the process as well as assumptions and estimates on the unknown parameters and variables that influence the process.

If possible the KPIs of the current processes are also calculated or measured to establish a baseline for the KPIs. This will establish a baseline that can demonstrate if the envisaged changes have brought the expected benefits.
